Environs Series History and Process
The Environs Series is an exploration of the images hidden just beyond sight in the beauty of the environments we walk through.
The Environs were birthed in the congruence of The Mirror Project and The Color Project... the Mirrors are shifted to grayscale, printed with archival inks on matte art paper, then hand-colored with woodstains and inks.
Project Inception June of 2013, at a frustration point with high season in hotel management leaving me no clear brain to paint or write or draw. I decided one night, to heck with it, I'm just going to print out some Mirrors to color. At least my hand will be moving and I'll feel like an artist again for a few hours.
I loved it, and off we went.
That about covers process. The Environs are second generation of The Mirror Project.. The original Mirror is converted to a grayscale print, printed at a 5x5 or 7x5 size with archival inks on archival paper, and then hand inked with whatever my favorite ink of the day is, with some woodstain thrown in. The built in shading that comes from the grayscale print is a bonus, and the only tricky part is not getting into the flow working in one area, without jumping over to the mirrored side to complete that before I pick up another shade of green and lose the symmetry.
The really fun part of the Series is that a lot of Mirrors in the Orphaned files (orphaned because the artist looked at it and thought Dang, Worst Mirror Ever) have found their raison d'etre. Witness Environ 22. Terrifically boring / dull / personality-less Mirror with good form and zero pop. Straight to Orphan file.
Resurrected into one of my favorite Environs, with a whole discovered in the coloring that I hadn't seen at all in the original Mirror.
For prints, the original is scanned at high resolution, and then incrementally stepped up in size to print in larger formats. Photoshop is really good at this, and as long as the steps are small and many, the print quality holds beautifully.

(Or a tree. I've done it on a tree. And a car. Only once on the dog.).
